This course provides mid-level training on the core skills used in metal engraving. This course will take students through a week of building and engraving a silver cuff bracelet. Students will learn the basics of silversmithing by getting hands-on experience with sawing, soldering, forming, and polishing. The bracelet will feature a cabochon stone and decorative bright cut engraving using advanced scrolls and borders. This course also includes instruction and hands-on practice creating decorative elements, design transfer, as well as sizing and shaping of bracelets.

 

Participants will learn how to set up and use the tools, prepare gravers, execute foundational cuts, and apply techniques consistently and effectively. This course is intended for engravers who are already proficient in engraving and know proper tool sharpening.

Objectives

  • Basic silversmithing techniques to include proper soldering along with equipment, tools, and safety
  • Sizing and shaping of bracelets
  • Setting of cabochon using a pre-formed bezel
  • Making and soldering decorative elements such as flowers, half beads, leaves, and wire scrolls
  • Clean up and polishing
  • Designing of advanced scrolls

Prerequisites

Completion of a GRS Basic Course or instructor approval is required, as well as an understanding of proper tool sharpening and basic engraving techniques. This intensive class requires students to be skilled in sharpening a range of gravers.

Graver Sharpening Knowledge: 90°, 120°, and flat gravers
