This advanced course covers bulino engraving, a unique style that uses engraved lines and dots to create photorealistic images on metal. Students will work on a variety of practice plates to develop control, consistency, and tool handling techniques. Subjects covered in class include feathers, fur, sky, trees, mountains, and more. The course covers all aspects of bulino engraving, including image transfer, tool sharpening, and proper shading, including light and shadow. Students will learn how to manipulate light and shadow to create atmosphere, emotion, and attitude, as well as how to use lines and dots to create interest and believability.

 

Participants will learn how to set up and use the tools, prepare gravers, execute foundational cuts, and apply techniques consistently and effectively. This course is intended for those who have experience engraving and creating common graver geometries, but no drawing skill/experience is required for this class.

Prerequisites

Completion of a GRS Basic Course or instructor approval is required, as well as an understanding of proper tool sharpening and basic engraving techniques.

Graver Sharpening Knowledge:
120° and 105° graver sharpening
