This fast-paced course provides an introduction to the core skills used in metal engraving and fabrication. Students will start by learning how to sharpen gravers and cut simple engraved patterns – essential skills for using engraving to embellish their work. From there, they will dive into jewelry fabrication, handcrafting a series of bands and performing various settings while honing skills like shaping, filing, torch control and proper technique for using a jeweler's saw. For the final project, students will create a pair of engraved earrings while exploring additional techniques such as piercing, doming, and making ear wires. This course also includes hands-on training and instruction in multiple types of settings including castle, bead and bright cut square settings, and cabochon.
Participants will learn how to create and use the tools, prepare gravers, execute foundational cuts, do classic settings, and apply techniques consistently and effectively. This course is intended for those who have at least some experience at the bench, whether that be engraving or even just polishing. The skills gained from this class are the perfect transition from Basic Stone Setting to Intro to Pavé.
*Images are just an example of what students could create with the skills taught in this course. Students will have the opportunity to use the techniques taught to them in this class to create any earring design they would like.
