Ron Smith
Bio
Ron Smith was one of the instructors chosen to teach during the first GRS Grand Masters Program in 2005. During his course, he guided students through multi-color inlays and advanced shading methods. Students learned which color of metals to use for the best composition, preparation of cavities and channels for inlay, as well as how to finish their work and solve issues that might arise during the process.
Ron began his engraving journey in 1962 and earned a world-class reputation for his intricate, award-winning designs. He first discovered the beauty of engraved art while stationed in Verona, Italy, though he did not realize then that it would ultimately become his career.
After completing his military service, his first job interview was with a jewelry shop, where he would take on various roles, including shop assistant, polisher, jewelry manufacturer, and diamond setter. The shop owner also mentioned that Ron could practice hand engraving whenever his regular duties allowed. Despite the low pay, the opportunity to learn engraving was appealing, and Ron accepted the job. After two years of engraving with a burin on copper plates at every chance, he developed his skills significantly and produced impressive work.
Ron engraved for many years in both the wholesale and retail trades. Throughout his career, he focused primarily on engraving jewelry, but he also built a strong reputation for his skills in engraving firearms and knives. He pursued ornamental work in his spare time, often working late into the night. In addition to engraving, he repaired jewelry, created custom pieces, set diamonds, practiced scrimshaw, carved wood, fabricated bronzes, produced intaglio prints, and made knives and muskets, as well as buckles and other items that allowed him to maintain a steady volume of work. Ron has also authored several books that are excellent resources for anyone hoping to learn more about the art of engraving.
