Philippe Grifnée

Bio

Philippe Grifnée taught as a GRS Grand Master in both 2006 and 2008. During both courses, he shared the extraordinary techniques that made his work sought-after by many prestigious European gunmakers and collectors worldwide.

Philippe studied under renowned Master René Delcour and graduated from the Liège, Belgium, School of Engraving in 1970. He refined his skills by engraving for Auguste Francotte and taught at the Liège School. Mr. Grifnée’s style blends the history and tradition of Belgium-style engraving with the things that inspired him. His execution is powerful yet elegant and balanced.
Philippe’s exquisite work caught the attention of English gunmaker Holland & Holland, who commissioned him to engrave for them in 1992. By 1997, the relationship had evolved into an exclusive agreement. His artistry became so highly regarded that another English firm, James Purdey & Sons, also hired him for engraving work.
The Belgian government has recognized Philippe twice for his work in the engraving arts: with a silver medal in 1992 and a gold medal in 1999.
