Martin Strolz

Bio

Martin Strolz of Steyr, Austria became the ninth Grand Master Engraver to share his knowledge during the program. Recognized worldwide for his unique Austrian style of engraving, Mr. Strolz brought a new dimension to the range of prior course offerings. Educator and Master engraver, he led participants on a journey of integrating artful layouts and designs on metal.

A teacher of the engraving arts for most of his life, Martin Strolz was born in Innsbruck, Tyrol in Austria in 1958. Martin left home at age 14 to begin his engraving education at a school in Steyr in Upper Austria, where he graduated with distinction.
During the following years, Strolz learned and engraved in Ferlach under the supervision of top Austrian engraver Hans Singer. He did engraving work for gunmakers such as Franz Sodia and Lechner & Jungl. Strolz completed his examination for engraving with honors, receiving a master craftsman’s diploma — all before he had a driver’s license.

Strolz has taught engraving at many vocational schools in Austria and in his own studio over the years. Today, he teaches engraving to international students in his own studio. As for freelance work, he continuously pursues work on interesting engraving commissions. With such extensive experience, Strolz is able to execute all forms of engraving on hunting firearms.

His work has been published in numerous publications and books, such as L`incisione delle Armi Sportive, Guns Magazine, The Double Gun Journal, The Engraver’s Journal, and Kulturbericht des Landes Oberösterreich. In 2007, Martin Strolz was awarded the “Engraving Arts Award of Educational Distinction” from Glendo Corporation and Emporia State University.
