Fabricating and Engraving: Ranger Buckle Set

This class will build a hollow style Ranger buckle set from sterling silver sheet and wire.  This style of buckle set requires multiple steps of forming, shaping, and soldering.  Students will learn to use the hydraulic press and several jigs and fixtures that are necessary to build a well made buckle set.  Proper measuring and fitting will also be covered.  Students will learn how to clean up, finish, and engrave all the parts, with the many challenges this project presents.  We will also cover trouble shooting and problem areas.

Description

Objectives

  • Basics of belt buckle design
  • Preparation of raw materials for fabrication
  •  Forming buckle parts using hydraulic press and dies
  • Silver soldering techniques
  • Fabricating keepers and tips
  • Decorative edge elements, including twisted wire
  • Proper piercing and prep of overlays
  • Sculpting and engraving overlays
  • Using special gravers for working around buckle edge and overlays
  • Engraving and background treatments, including working around edges and overlays
  • Stippling and cross hatching
  • Fabrication and soldering of buckle backs and tongues
  • Addressing fire scale, solder over-runs and other cleanup challenges
  • Using micro motor for finishing
  • Marking & signing finished buckle

Prerequisites

Completion of a GRS Basic Engraving course or instructor approval is required, as well as an understanding of proper tool sharpening and basic bright cutting techniques.
