Students will learn to lay out scroll designs and engrave on a stainless steel pistol with curved surfaces and tricky, hard-to-access areas. Skills taught will be basic firearms disassembly and reassembly, metal prep, design layout, workholding, gold wire prep, plush and raised gold inlay, fine shading, mild sculpting, and various background treatments.

The Bond Arms Derringer is an excellent canvas on which to teach advanced gun engraving skills. The pistol is easy to disassemble and reassemble, making it a good introduction to basic gunsmithing skills and best practices during the breakdown process. While the gun is engravable as is, it can benefit from a bit of further metal prep. Students will learn the correct method for sanding and preparing a firearm for engraving, as well as some tricks to speed up the process developed and borrowed from the instructor’s experience as a jeweler. Next, it offers a mildly curved surface and a few tricky areas where students will need to cut scrolls from various directions when working up against a 90° wall. Students will also learn to lay out the scroll design by hand drawing and striving scrolls onto the curved surface of the frame sides. Class goals include learning the skills to engrave and inlay one barrel section and one side of a Bond Arms Derringer with the provided scroll design. Students can then complete the gun at home using skills learned in class.
