Gain practical knife engraving experience during this course with master engraver Sam Alfano. The course will focus on adding deep relief engraving to a traditional Bowie-style knife designed by the legendary master bladesmith Harvey Dean. The oval guard, spacer, cap, and nut are all stainless steel pieces that can be removed and engraved. Students will engrave A McKenzie-esque bold scroll on one side of the guard and a classic sunburst motif from early weapons engraving on the other. The bordered edge can be engraved in a traditional running wheat and crossed ribbon or the student's preference. The spacer will provide experience working on a tighter, curved surface. If time permits, the end cap and nut may also be engraved. The finished knife will be suitable for display. Mr. Dean will provide wooden handles for the knives. Students may use their own designs or those provided for the course.
